Welcome - We are Bill and Dianne. We have been selling garlic and other produce at the "Olympia Farmers Market," since 1992. In need of extra funds to help support our suddenly expanded family, we have decided to sell on-line also. Our garlic is "naturally grown" i.e. no herbicides or insecticides. Only OMRI (Organic Materials Review Institute) approved fertilizers are used. We grow on raised beds and plant on an 8x8" grid, spacing four rows wide in a 36" wide bed raised 6-8" above a 2' wide path. The tilled path soil is shoveled onto the adjacent beds. The bed is leveled with a 3' foot landscape rake. Plant spacing is essential for air flow and root development. We average about 80" of rain per year, with winter temperatures dipping into the teens. A good straw mulch is essential for weed control, moisture retention and moderation of soil temperature. Weeds are hand pulled. Feeder roots are abundant beneath the straw - hoeing would damage them and yield smaller bulbs. Straw is applied 2-3 inches thick after planting. We converted an underused greenhouse into a climate controlled curing and storage facility which means we control temperature and humidity for a balanced and thorough curing. Way too much garlic is needlessly ruined due to moisture being retained far too long. An in-depth soil analysis is crucial for a well-fed bulb of large size. We use Kinsey Agricultural Services, Inc. Charleston, Mo. Phone 573-683-3880 www.kinseyag.com. He studied under Dr. William A. Albrecht and his book, "HANDS-ON AGRONOMY" is a must read, it can be purchased from www.acresusa.com A balanced soil is absolutely necessary for the first step. I read Ron Engeland's "Growing Great Garlic" frequently and am always learning something new. We do not pop tops. Ron notes "popping tops" is not necessary for large bulbs if you have highly fertile soil. We harvest and cure with tops intact, it’s a beautiful sight to see a field with tops undulating in the breeze. Plant the "seeds" from the tops - they make great garlic greens. At the Olympia Farmers Market the biggies sell fast and the runts well under 2" will test your ability to eat lots of garlic. Most of last year's crop measured between 2-3 inches diameter and the biggest weighed almost a quarter pound. Each quarter inch size increase on a 2" bulb will add 1/2 to 3/4 ounce of weight, and the bulb is much taller. This years crop is right on target. If you scrimp now, you are gonna pay later, the labor is all the same. The quality of your product is determined by the weakest link. Experimentation is the surest way to prove/disprove myths. Some mythologists say rocamboles do not do well in wet/mild climates - needless to say, we are very pleased with our crops. Thank you.
We will have more
varieties next year and increased plantings.
